Beginning at Buick

Walter P. Chrysler’s first experience in the auto industry was with Buick (now General Motors) where he was hired by James Storrow as a works manager. One of the first things he did on his way up to becoming President of Buick was design a cost analysis system for each car produced, ending Buick's piecework schedule. As was his habit as a “hands-on” manager Walter carried a little ledger just as he did as a boy, noting the cost of every part of a car, down to a bolt or screw.
